Ironman Guide OSRS: Early Quests, Gear & Progression

Ironman adventurer in a castle courtyard, an OSRS-inspired beginner guide illustration
Original OSRS-inspired illustration for this beginner guide.

Start an OSRS Ironman by completing useful quests, unlocking easier travel and building a repeatable supply routine. Put food, runes and protection prayers ahead of expensive gear grinds. Once those basics are reliable, work towards quest weapons, Barrows gloves and the combat upgrades that support the activities you actually enjoy.

Your first big upgrade might be a teleport rather than a weapon. Without other players supplying your account, each journey, potion and failed attempt has a cost. This Old School RuneScape Ironman guide gives you a flexible route from a fresh account into the mid-game, without making a 99 or rare drop your first compulsory goal.

Who this is for: a regular, bank-using solo Ironman with membership. Hardcore players can use the broad goals with extra preparation. Ultimate Ironman inventory management and Group Ironman team planning need different routes; their key differences are explained below. There is also a short free-to-play starting plan.

Choose the right Ironman mode before you start

Select your Ironman mode with the tutor before leaving Tutorial Island. A regular account already on the mainland cannot simply be converted into an Ironman. Read the mode confirmation carefully, especially if you are choosing a Hardcore or group account.

ModeWhat changesHow to use this guide
Regular IronmanYou gather your own supplies and upgrades; normal player trading and buying gear on the Grand Exchange are unavailable.Follow the main roadmap. NPC shops are still useful.
Hardcore IronmanA dangerous death removes your Hardcore status; the account continues as a regular Ironman.Prepare routes, escape options and encounters before risking the status.
Ultimate IronmanNormal bank storage is unavailable, alongside other storage and death-related restrictions.Use a dedicated UIM route rather than banking the supplies suggested here.
Group IronmanEligible group members can share resources under their group rules.Divide gathering and crafting jobs; check the rules for your group type.

Ironman does not mean that every item must be crafted from scratch. Shops, quest rewards, skilling rewards and eligible monster drops all help. Special content has its own participation rules, so check the activity before assuming another player can help you obtain loot. The Ironman mode rules cover those exceptions.

Your first goals: useful unlocks before long grinds

Treat these as checkpoints, not a race or a strict order. If an unlock is currently blocked by a difficult fight or an awkward item, work on another part of the account and return with better preparation.

  • A dependable food source: enough healing for your next quest, plus a way to replace what you use.
  • Useful early quest rewards: skip some slow starting levels and open new routes.
  • Repeatable transport: start with accessible teleports, then work towards the Ardougne cloak and fairy rings.
  • Protection prayers: make 43 Prayer a medium-term target for access to Protect from Melee, alongside the earlier protection prayers. Some attacks still bypass protection.
  • A supply routine: keep seeds, herbs, useful secondaries and ammunition organised so combat does not stop every few trips.

Early Ironman quests and what each one solves

Quest rewards can move your account past its slowest training. Plan around rewards and prerequisites together. A quest with no formal combat requirement can still send you past monsters capable of killing a new account.

Quest or milestoneWhy it helpsPreparation note
Cook’s Assistant, The Restless Ghost and X Marks the SpotSmall introductory goals with useful starting rewards.Collect supplies yourself and check how any selectable XP reward can be used.
Druidic RitualUnlocks Herblore training.Complete it before planning your potion-making routine.
Waterfall QuestAwards 13,750 Attack XP and 13,750 Strength XP.Dangerous enemies are on the route. Bring appropriate food and know the route first.
Tree Gnome Village and The Grand TreeCombat XP and useful transport unlocks.Check each quest’s requirements and boss strategy separately.
Lost City, Fairytale I and part of Fairytale IIBuilds the route towards the fairy ring network.Unlocking the rings does not require completing all of Fairytale II.
Bone VoyageOpens Fossil Island and the route to bird house runs.Requires The Dig Site and 100 Museum kudos; bird houses have their own skill requirements.
Recipe for DisasterA longer account-building goal leading to Barrows gloves.Complete the subquests gradually; the final stage requires 175 quest points and further prerequisites.

For a strict quest-by-quest sequence, use the Wiki’s optimal Ironman quest guide. For a first account, it is reasonable to pause that sequence for extra Hitpoints, food or a more comfortable combat setup. Efficiency loses its value if the route keeps sending you into fights you do not understand.

Make travel easier early

Repeated walks add up. Unlocking a route you use every session can be more valuable than a small damage increase. Start with travel options you can already afford and replace them as your account opens up.

  • Ardougne cloak 1: the easy Ardougne Diary reward gives unlimited teleports to the monastery south of Ardougne. The altar is useful, but this is not a direct bank or farm-patch teleport.
  • Fairy rings: complete Fairytale I and progress Fairytale II until you receive access. You do not need the full second quest’s Farming and Herblore requirements just to unlock the network. Bring your dramen or lunar staff until you qualify for staff-free use.
  • Teleport jewellery and spells: gather the materials and runes you need for your own routes. Carry an exit teleport for dangerous trips and understand where it will work.
  • Agility and lighter equipment: improve your travelling comfort alongside quests. Full graceful can be a later convenience rather than a reason to stop all other progress.

The fairy ring access requirements and Ardougne cloak details are useful references when you are planning those unlocks. Before a quest, write down your outward journey and return route; remembering only the first half is a common source of wasted running.

Build supplies that support the whole account

Food, herbs and potion ingredients

Choose food you can replace comfortably. Cakes work for many low-damage trips, but a multi-bite food is not a substitute for stronger healing when an enemy can hit hard. Keep your quest food separate from the supplies you are willing to use for routine training.

Start herb runs once you have suitable seeds, patches and levels. Keep the secondary ingredients needed for your planned potions. When you can use Farming Guild contracts, they give you another reason to keep Farming moving. A small routine that you actually follow is more useful than an elaborate daily checklist you avoid.

Bird houses, runes and ammunition

After Bone Voyage, learn a short bird house route using the logs and seeds available to you. Check the Hunter and Crafting requirements for the bird houses you want to make. Fit runs around longer activities instead of interrupting every enjoyable session for a timer.

NPC rune and ammunition shops can bridge gaps in your own production. Buy enough for the activity you have planned and keep travel money aside. An Ironman’s useful supplies have a replacement cost in time, even when no coins change hands.

Pick a skilling activity for a specific need

ActivityEntry checkpointWhy consider it?
Wintertodt50 FiremakingFiremaking training and supply rewards. Use it if those are useful now; 99 Firemaking is optional.
Tempoross35 FishingFishing training with fish and other reward-pool supplies. Specific uniques remain random.
Guardians of the RiftComplete Temple of the Eye; its quest chain brings you to at least 27 RunecraftRunecraft training and runes; access to individual altars depends on their requirements.
Hunters’ Rumours46 Hunter for novice rumours, with the relevant Varlamore accessHunter training and reward supplies; check which creatures your current travel and equipment can support.

Wintertodt: current advice its current warmth system means the old recommendation to keep Hitpoints low for reduced cold damage is outdated. Do it when you want the training or supplies. It is still a dangerous activity: allowing warmth to reach zero causes death, so Hardcore players must stay attentive.

How to make useful Ironman money

Separate coins you can spend from the Grand Exchange value of your bank. A valuable item does not become spendable cash just because a normal account could sell it to another player. Equally, selling an item you will need for a quest can create a much longer replacement grind.

  • Early on: use accessible Thieving and carefully chosen shop sales to cover food, runes and travel. Keep quest items and materials you already have a use for.
  • As skills improve: compare attention-heavy Thieving with methods you find easier to sustain. Do not copy a high-level GP/hour claim onto your starting account.
  • At 55 Magic: High Level Alchemy becomes an option for suitable spare items. Subtract the nature rune cost and keep useful gear, clue items and crafting materials.
  • Later: combat drops and skilling can fund larger goals. Budget separately for rune purchases, Construction and recurring costs before committing your cash stack.

For a simple planning example, suppose an item alchs for 1,200 coins and your nature rune costs 250 coins. With a staff supplying the fire runes, the cash added is 950 coins per cast. Those are illustrative inputs, not a live price quote; gathering or buying the item also has a cost.

OSRS Ironman gear progression: upgrade with a purpose

There is no single best gear ladder for every account. Choose a weapon for the enemy’s defence, your unlocked attack styles and the supplies you can replace. A rare upgrade is a poor short-term target if the grind prevents you from reaching several reliable quest rewards.

FocusPractical progression goalImportant condition
MeleeMove from accessible training weapons towards a dragon scimitar. Consider a zombie axe when its extra requirements fit your account.Dragon scimitar: 60 Attack and Monkey Madness I; Daga sells it for 100,000 coins. Zombie axe: 65 Attack to wield and 70 Smithing to repair the broken drop, with a valid boost possible.
RangedUse an affordable bow and ammunition, then consider a Dorgeshuun crossbow with bone bolts. The crossbow requires 28 Ranged. The Lost Tribe unlocks access to Nardok’s shop; the later Death to the Dorgeshuun quest is not required merely to wield it.
MagicBuild a stock of combat runes and use spells suited to the enemy. Later, choose a powered staff or a quest spell for your target.Check elemental weaknesses, spell requirements and rune or charge upkeep instead of assuming one spell works everywhere.
Shared upgradesWork through Recipe for Disaster and other useful quest rewards. Add a defender when you can comfortably access and fight in the Warriors’ Guild.Barrows gloves require full Recipe for Disaster completion. Each equipment upgrade has its own requirements; total combat level alone does not unlock it.

Use the dragon scimitar and zombie axe item pages to check the exact weapon requirements before committing supplies. A slower weapon is not automatically worse, but its best use depends on the target; do not compare weapons by their Strength bonus alone.

Moving into the mid-game

You are ready to broaden your goals when you can reach an activity, complete attempts and replace the food and potions without rebuilding your bank each time. That is a more useful checkpoint than an arbitrary total level.

Slayer can combine combat training with future equipment unlocks. Scurrius is an option for practising prayer changes and movement. Barrows and Moons of Peril offer different equipment routes once you meet their access requirements and can handle the encounters. Pick one objective and prepare for that specific fight rather than carrying the same setup everywhere.

Before a random-drop grind, decide what you will do if the item does not arrive quickly. Our OSRS dry calculator can put an ordinary fixed-rate drop streak in context. It does not make the next kill more likely to succeed, and complex reward systems need the correct probability inputs.

What changes for free-to-play Ironman?

You can start Ironman without membership, but most of this roadmap uses members’ quests and activities. In F2P, focus on available quests, Fishing and Cooking, accessible combat training, and making or obtaining your own equipment. Work towards Dragon Slayer I when you are prepared for its requirements and fight.

Do not plan around fairy rings, Herblore, Wintertodt or Barrows gloves on an F2P account. Use the separate F2P Ironman guide for methods you can actually access. If you later become a member, pick up the travel and supply goals rather than restarting your account.

A practical plan for your next session

Choose one unlock and list its blockers. For example, if your goal is fairy rings, check the quest chain, the items for Fairytale I and your ability to handle its combat. Gather those supplies first, then do the quest steps. You do not have to finish Fairytale II to use the rings.

Combat feels difficult despite new gearCheck prayers, enemy weaknesses, food and the encounter mechanics.
One rare item has stopped all progressSet a session limit and switch to another useful account goal.

Use our OSRS XP calculator to turn a level target into an XP gap. For example, level 40 starts at 37,224 XP and level 43 starts at 50,339 XP: that is 13,115 XP if you begin exactly at the level-40 threshold. Enter your actual XP for a more accurate target.

The combat level calculator can help you understand which levels change your overall combat level. It is not a boss-readiness score: gear, prayers and knowing the fight still matter.

Common mistakes that make progression harder

  • Following an old route without checking it: quest requirements and game systems change. Low-HP Wintertodt advice is one example.
  • Rushing a 99 because it appears first in a guide: stay only while the activity supports your goals or you enjoy doing it.
  • Using the Wilderness as a default shortcut: consider the risk and alternatives, especially on Hardcore. Do not carry supplies you cannot comfortably replace.
  • Ignoring the items behind a level requirement: a Crafting level is only useful if you also have the gems, moulds, runes or other materials needed for the item.
  • Chasing every upgrade before practising: learn an encounter with an appropriate setup, then target the improvement that will make a meaningful difference.

Ironman guide OSRS: common questions

What should I do first on a new OSRS Ironman?

Choose the mode before leaving Tutorial Island, establish a food source, and complete useful early quests. Then improve travel and plan your next few unlocks. You do not need to begin with a long 99 grind.

Do I need to get 99 Firemaking at Wintertodt first?

No. Wintertodt is an optional source of training and supplies. Its warmth system also makes old low-Hitpoints rushing advice outdated. Stop when another activity better supports your account goals.

Do I need 57 Herblore to unlock fairy rings?

No. You need the prerequisite quests and enough progress in Fairytale II to receive access. The full quest’s Herblore and Farming requirements are not needed just to unlock the fairy ring network.

Can an Ironman use shops or buy gear?

Ironmen can use eligible NPC shops, but cannot buy ordinary gear from other players or the Grand Exchange. Some shops and activities have special restrictions. Bonds have separate Grand Exchange rules.

What is the best Ironman gear progression route?

Choose upgrades for the content you want to do. Reliable quest rewards, sustainable ammunition and runes, and useful prayers usually form a better foundation than chasing a rare item before your supplies are stable.
